I wanted to research about the psychological impact of gun shot wounds to better understand the mental state of the patients that I am approaching for the Gun Violence Social Media Study. Since my time as an RA, this study certainly has been the most difficult for enrollment. Some notable symptoms of the after effects of gun shots include “nightmares,” “thinking about the event over and over,” and “irritability or easily being upset” (Heller, 2018). Although these symptoms were not at all surprising, it was an important reminder of how traumatizing gun shot violence is for these patients. I feel that having this background knowledge will better allow me to accept the situations when patients refuse to do the survey. Specifically, if patients seem unusually irritable, I will now have an easier time handling this situation. I will remember that irritability is a known symptom after a gun shot wound and not necessarily a negative reflection of myself or the patient themselves.
